Getting your flu vaccine each year can reduce your risk of getting sick and help protect the people around you, especially those who are more vulnerable to serious illness. The Putnam County Health Department offers seasonal flu vaccinations for people 6 months and older. Make your flu shot part of your yearly health routine and head into the season prepared.

Who Should Get a Flu Vaccine?
The CDC recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, with rare exceptions. Flu vaccination is particularly important for people at higher risk of serious complications, including:
- Adults age 65 and older
- Young children
- Pregnant women
- People with certain chronic health conditions, including asthma, diabetes, and heart or lung disease
- People who live with or care for someone at higher risk of serious flu complications
Why Get a Flu Vaccine?
Flu can be more than an inconvenience. Influenza can lead to serious complications, including hospitalization, particularly among people who are at higher risk.
Getting vaccinated each year can:
- Reduce your risk of getting sick with the flu.
- Reduce the risk of serious flu complications.
- Help reduce flu-related hospitalizations.
- Help protect people around you who may be more vulnerable to serious illness.
The flu vaccine is updated each year because influenza viruses change over time, and protection from vaccination decreases. That’s why an annual flu vaccine is recommended.
When Should I Get My Flu Shot?
For most people who need one dose of flu vaccine for the season, September and October are generally good times to get vaccinated. CDC recommends getting vaccinated by the end of October when possible, but vaccination can still be beneficial later in the season.
It takes about two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop antibodies that provide protection against flu, so don’t wait until flu is already circulating widely to get your shot.
