Health Officials Confirm Pertussis Cases in Putnam County

The Putnam County Health Department has confirmed a few cases of pertussis (whooping cough) within the county. The Health Department is working closely with community health providers to mitigate the situation and provide guidance on caring for patients.

Given the highly contagious nature of this respiratory illness, the Health Department is urging members of the community to take necessary preventive measures and report symptoms of respiratory illness to their primary care provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Pertussis is a bacterial infection that spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Symptoms often begin with cold-like signs, such as a runny nose, mild fever, and occasional coughing, and can progress to severe coughing fits that may cause difficulty breathing, vomiting, or exhaustion.

While pertussis can affect individuals of all ages, it poses the greatest risk to infants, young children, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those who are unvaccinated.

The Health Department is actively working to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed to the confirmed cases. Efforts include contact tracing, providing guidance to those at risk, and recommending treatment of post-exposure prophylaxis with antibiotics regardless of immunization status.

“Our primary focus is to contain the spread of pertussis and ensure the health and safety of our community,” said Putnam County Health Officer Dr. Samia Turner. “We encourage everyone to stay informed, watch for symptoms, and ensure they are up to date on their vaccinations.”

To help prevent further cases, the Health Department recommends the following steps:

  • Ensure all routine vaccinations, including the DTaP and Tdap vaccines, are current. These vaccines provide protection against pertussis.
  • Practice good hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap and water, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with individuals who are sick.
  • Seek medical attention promptly if you or a family member develop symptoms of pertussis, especially if you have been in contact with a confirmed or suspected case.

The Health Department will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed. For more information about pertussis, vaccinations, or general health inquiries, please contact the Putnam County Health Department at 304-757-2541.
